Beamish - the most visited attraction in the North East!
We are delighted to work with Beamish - most visited attraction in the North East!
Beamish is an open‑air living museum in County Durham, dedicated to bringing the everyday history of North East England to life through immersive, period‑accurate environments.
Beamish is not your standard museum! Visitors can step directly into fully recreated historical periods, complete with costumed actors and vintage transport. It recreates life from the 1820s, 1900s, 1940s, and 1950s, using original and replica buildings, working transport, costumed interpreters, and over 300,000 artefacts.
This year, museum is celebrating being named the most visited attraction in the North East for a second year running. A report from the Association of Leading Visitor Attractions (ALVA) placed Beamish 49th nationally, with 815,075 visitors to the museum in 2025, putting it top of the list in the region. Research conducted by (ALVA) found that the total number of visits to its 409 sites last year was 165 million, which was a 2% increase on the previous year.
Beamish came to us in need of an update to their site map and the Colour Heroes team embraced the challenge of producing a fully illustrated visitor map designed to help people navigate this huge 350 acres site.
Our experienced team ensured that each attraction was clearly numbered so visitors can quickly locate key exhibitions, while essential facilities, including toilets, baby‑changing areas and food outlets are also highlighted. This bespoke site map shows the overall layout, main routes and points of interest, engaging guests and encouraging them to explore the museum’s extensive grounds.
It was essential that the map provided information for visitors so that they can gain the full experience during their visit, Beamish is a living museum, meaning history isn’t displayed behind glass — it’s enacted. Visitors can walk through entire reconstructed towns and villages, ride restored trams, explore a 1900s colliery, visit a 1940s farm, or step into a 1950s high street.
